Guided hikes on the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer

Specially trained guides accompany you on hikes to unusual places and show you the countryside, its people, its food and above all its wine. Let them take you by the hand and introduce you to a two thousand year old culture. The tours are usually in German, but some of the guides may be able to offer you a tour in English. Ring up and ask.

Altburg-Oppidum

Distance: about 25 miles, north-west of Kirn, near Bundenbach


Altburg-Oppidum

A settlement of the Celtic tribe of the Treveri (circa. 250-100 B.C.), most easterly member of a chain of late Celtic hill forts. The central area of the hill fort has been reconstructed and shows several buildings both dwelling houses and storage rooms.

Every year during the second week in August the cultural society of Bundenbach stage a "Festival of the Celtic Settlement" to which various musicians, who play Celtic music, are invited.

You should aim to combine your visit to Altburg with a visit to the slate quarry at Herrenberg and the ruined castle of Schmidtburg.

Ausonius Road (Roman road between Bingen and Trier)

Distance: about 8 miles, south-east of Burgen, near Elzerath
cyclists please note the large difference in height!

South-east of Burgen you can find traces of the typically straight Roman road between Trier and Bingen, known locally as the "Ausonius Road" after the Roman poet and traveller.

Near Elzerath you can follow the road for several miles through the forest. A detour to Heidenpütz along the Heinz stream in the direction of Rapperath can be recommended. You will find Roman ruins there and a prehistoric stone monument. Or you can go to Weinplatz, about 3 miles from Elzerath, where you will find barrows (Celtic tombs). Also worth a visit is the Grauen Lei near the junction of the modern roads to Morbach and Veldenz. It is an impressive quartz rocky outcrop which was a Celtic sacred place.

Between Horbruch and Kirchberg a 3 mile long prehistoric hiking trail has been created. Nearby you can visit a reconstructed Roman watch tower (near Dill), more barrows and two children's playgrounds which have been modelled on Roman times.

Roman Tombstone at Igel


Igeler Säule

Distance: about 30 miles, south-west of Trier, on the B49, in Igel


The word tombstone does not do justice to this impressive Roman monument from the third century which dwarfs the two storey houses in its vicinity. It was erected by a wealthy Celtic cloth merchant in the typical Roman fashion at the side of the road from Trier to Reims. It is listed by the Unesco World Heritage and is the largest of its kind north of the Alpes.

Celtic hill fort at Dollberg


Distance: about 32 miles, south of Hermeskeil, on th B327/52, near Otzenhausen

A surprisingly well preserved defensive wall dating from circa. 50 B.C. The fort covers 46 acres of hilltop and was surrounded by a wall of wooden piles and stones over a mile and half long and the population withdrew into it during times of unrest. It is the largest of its kind in the Hunsrück.

The fort is open at all times and costs nothing to visit. From May to October on the first Saturday in the month you can take part in a guided tour at 2 p.m. It last about 2 hours and you should wear stout shoes. Meet at the parkplace in the wood near Otzenhausen.

Celtic hill fort at Allenbach

Distance: about 22 miles, south of Morbach, B422, near Allenbach


One of the best preserved prehistoric forts in the whole of central Europe. It was presumably the capital of the Celtic tribe of the Treveri. It shows the type of construction used in the La Téne period (5th to the 1st century B.C.) known as murus gallicus. You can visit the remains of the walls and the gates.

The fort is open at all times and costs nothing to visit.

Vicus Belginum

Celtic and Roman Settlement (400 B.C. - 400 A.D.). Remains of houses, temples, wells, watertanks, roads and, above all, graves.

Museum with permanent exhibits and Special Exhibitions on various themes, lectures, conferences, open air festivals, activities with children on particular subjects (e.g. play in Roman times, food and drink, plants etc.), summer program, guided tours by children and for children, and lots more.

The Vicus Belginum support society allows anybody to participate in the further developement of the museum.

Wildenburg

Distance: about 20 miles, south-east of Kempfeld

A place steeped in history with the remains of human settlements covering 2000 years. It started life as a Celtic hill fort, was later used as a Roman holy place and in the middle ages was a castle of the counts of Wildenburg (14th century). Spectacular views from an observation tower over the forests of Hochwald and Idarwald. There is a tour with instructional signs, an animal park, café and restaurant.

Roman Festival in Trier

Music festival between June and July against the backdrop of the listed Roman remains in Trier.

A varied program of opera, musicals and plays are performed in the Amphitheater, Porta Nigra and the Emporer's Baths. Avantgarde and classical performances are both catered for. Greek and Roman drama productions are featured as are modern interpretations of traditional pieces.

Memorial of the Concentration Camp at Hinzert

Erected by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in memory of the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis here between 1939 and 1945. Due to the European importance of the memorial, information about the criminals and their victims is presented in 4 languages (German, English, French and Polish).

No other museum in Germany presents so much information about the Roman and Celtic civilisation which flourished in the first 400 years after the birth of Christ. In addition to more than 200 mosaics, the visitor can study a complete historical collection of coins stretching from Roman times to the Middle Ages.

Here you will find 1500 sq. ft. of Indoor Thermal Baths with a water temperature of 32 degrees, a Whirlpool with a water temperature of 36 degrees and an outdoor pool with a water temperature of 31 degrees, a Solarium and a sun terrace. In addition there are 3 Finnish saunas and a steam sauna.

Meals can be had in a Cafeteria with seating for 60 indoors and 30 outdoors. There is also a "Vitamin" bar and a bar in the sauna area.

Traben-Trarbach

Well-known for its wealth of Art Nouveux architecture. There are many impressive buildings from the latter part of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. The town is dominated by the ruins of the castle of Grevenburg.

Trier

Distance: about 30 miles

Oldest city in Germany. It was the residence of 6 emperors of Rome including Constantine. In the city you can see an amphitheatre, 2 Roman baths, the world-famous Roman city gate "Porta Nigra" and the emprorer Constantine's throne room. The Rhineland Museum is worth a visit as are the shops in the pedestrian precinct.
