The Romans and the Celts were well aware of the geographical advantages of the valley Frohnbach stream. Nowhere else could a road be built leading from the Moselle valley to the Hunsrück plateau with such a gentle gradient that horse drawn waggons could easily make the climb.
Cyclists in modern times appreciate the same gentle gradients.
The difference in altitude between Burgen and the Hunsrück plateau at Gornhausen is about 800 feet, but the climb is so gentle that even untrained cyclists will not be tempted to give up.

The Moselle river with bike paths along both banks flows by only about a couple of miles from Burgen, a distance that can be covered by bike in about a quarter of an hour.
In addition there is a wealth of farm tracks, forest trails and cycle ways not to mention many less frequented side roads which can make your cycle holiday in the valley of the Frohnbach stream a real experience.
You don't even need to bring your own bicycle.
Many of our landlords are equipped for guests who like to cycle and can supply you with bikes and accessories during your stay in Burgen. Watch out for this symbol when you consult our list of guest rooms, holiday flats and houses.

A Sunday devoid of traffic on the Moselle in late May or early June each year. Food and drink can be sampled in one of the thousands of stands and open wine cellars along the way.
Many towns and villages offer a varied program of entertainment for the cylclist and in-line skaters passing by.
In preparation, the roads on both sides of the Moselle between Cochem and Schweich are closed to motorised traffic from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. With a length of nearly a hundred miles this is the longest temporary road closure in Europe.
